The Top 10 Trainer Cards in the Modified Format

While Trainer cards may not necessarily be the most popular Pokemon cards or stars of a deck, they are certainly a necessity for anyone that wants to compete at a tournament level.

Here are my top 10 Trainer Cards you must have for any Pokemon deck, starting with number 10 down all the way down to numero uno:

10. TGI Energy Gain (Platinum)
Essentially, TGI Energy Gain is an Energy Card, except that you can play it down along with your normal energy attachment for your turn. Any time you can get more than 1 Energy down per turn, you have gained a huge edge over your opponent.

Every single SP Pokemon deck should play 4 of this card; it makes you that much quicker and more likely to win.

9. Night Maintenance (Secret Wonders)
Every single deck out there really needs to play at least 1 Night Maintenance. Let's face it; your Pokemon are going to get knocked out during the course of a game. Night Maintenance allows you to get them back. This is especially important if you only play 1 copy of a specific Pokemon in your deck, like a LV.X for example.

8. TGI Power Spray (Platinum)
This card gives you the ability to stop your opponent's Pokemon Powers during THEIR turn. There is no way they can play around it; if you have the card in hand, you can stop them. The most important Pokemon Powers you will want to stop are Uxie LA's "Set Up", Claydol GE's "Cosmic Power", and Luxray GL LV.X's "Bright Eyes".

Every SP Pokemon deck should play this card in multiplies of 3 or 4.

6. Cynthia's Feelings (Legends Awakened)
This is really one of the only cards that gives you any recovery ability in the game right now, but it is rather strong recovery. After one of your Pokemon are knocked out, Cynthia's Feelings allows you shuffle your hand into your deck and draw 8 cards, an almost excessively generous amount.

Most decks, especially Stage 2 decks, need to run a few copies of this card. Without it, you would have no counter-punch to your opponent's offensive.

6. TGI Poke Turn (Platinum)
This is in my opinion the best SP Pokemon Trainer out there for its ability to be an offensive and defensive card. It is extremely versatile.

A couple ways to play offensively with TGI Poke Turn are to Poke Turn Crobat G and Luxray GL LV.X in order to use their Pokemon Powers multiple times in a game. The ability to do this is huge; those Pokemon both have game breaking offensive Pokemon Powers.

However, this card can also be used defensively to remove damaged Pokemon from play. This can prevent your opponent from drawing prizes, which may be the deciding factor between a win or a loss.

Every SP Pokemon deck needs to play 4 TGI Poke Turn no matter what, and even non-SP decks can effectively use 4 copies of it with 2 Crobat G.

5. Rare Candy (Great Encounters)
Rare Candy allows you to potentially get a Stage 2 Pokemon in play the first turn of the game. Turn 1 Machamp, Kingdra, and Beedrill are all lethal. It is almost unfair that this card give you that ability.

Needless to say, all Stage 2 Pokemon decks must use 4 copies of this card.

4. Cyrus's Conspiracy (Platinum)
This card allows you to pull a Supporter Card, Energy Gain, and Team Galactic's Trainer from you deck. I would say that is pretty good, considering how great all the TG's Trainers are. A solid strategy is to use Cyrus to grab another one from your deck, so you can use the card again the next turn. Just rinse and repeat.

All SP decks have got to use 4 Cyrus's Conspiracy, and even some non-SP decks can use a couple if they play TGI Poke Turn.

3. Bebe's Search (Secret Wonders, Rising Rivals)
Bebe's Search lets you get any Pokemon card, including LV.X's, from your deck. There is no other card that lets you do that. For that reason, I have placed this card very high on the list.

Any Stage 2 deck will benefit substantially from playing 4 Bebe's Search, and SP decks will benefit from playing 1 to 2 copies of the card.

2. Luxury Ball (Stormfront)
Even though Luxury Ball does not allow you to search for LV.X Pokemon, it is not a Supporter card, which is a big benefit. This means you can play Luxury ball in addition to your Supporter card for the turn. It gives any deck some much needed speed.

I would never play more than 2 Luxury Ball in any deck, but every deck needs at least 1. It is just too good.

1. Roseanne's Research (Secret Wonders)
This has got to be the best Trainer card out there right now. Every tournament worthy deck out there uses 4 Roseanne's Research. It's a simple fact: the quicker you can get your basic Pokemon in play, the quicker you can evolve, Level Up, and attack, all of which are factors that lead to victory.

Roseanne's Research also allows you to search for Energy, which means you can get away with playing less Energy Cards than normal because you can search them out with Roseanne's Research.

Honorable mentions which I could not fit on the list include TGI SP Radar (Rising Rivals), VS Seeker (Supreme Victors), Premier Ball (Stormfront), Aaron's Collection (Rising Rivals), and Warp Point (Diamond & Pearl, Majestic Dawn).
